IS IT THE SAME STRING IN

EVERY PHOTOGRAPH?

Yes! THE STRING was purchased from a Guatemalan street market in January of 2018. Mariano Cortez and Chelsea Nix travel around the world with a few bags, their camera, and THE STRING. Each photograph is captured by the husband and wife team with the very same simple white rope they call THE STRING.

HOW DO YOU TRAVEL ON A

SIMPLE BUDGET?

Photographers Cortez and Nix own little,

live simply, and travel long & slow using local transportation when available, often times staying in the homes of people they meet along the way. The husband and wife duo created the project by living of an average of $30/day, including airfare.  For the past 7 years, with the help of others, they have been able to sustain this lifestyle and create a 501(c)(3) to give back to those in need. Help them keep going and learn more about their community centers and global outreach programs.

WHEN DID THE STRING PROJECT WIN THE WORLD'S

LARGEST OPEN ART COMPETITION?

ArtPrize is one of the largest international art competitions in the world held in Grand Rapids, Michigan with over 160 venues and around 1,400 artists participating. During 19 days over 500,000 people attend, making it the "most-attended" public art event on the planet.

In 2018 a selected jury and the public casts votes to choose their favorite 2D and 3D piece, installation and time-based art entries. THE STRING PROJECT received both the Grand Prize Award selected by the public, the Latino Award, and was in the top 5 for the jury's 2D award selection. This was the first time in the history of the competition that photography had ever won the Grand Prize.
